A bit of a delayed recommendation, but better late than never: Killer Heat.

I very rarely give out 5 stars — but this film absolutely earns them. Picture this: the island of Crete, a mysterious murder, a wealthy family with too many secrets, a love triangle, and a web of lies. All wrapped in the mood and style of a classic neo-noir thriller, complete with the detective’s internal monologue. Naturally, he’s a former cop who lost his job in disgrace — because of course he is.
The script follows the familiar beats of the genre, and you’ll probably figure out the “who” and “why” fairly early on. But the chemistry between Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Shailene Woodley is genuinely great — surprisingly so. And to top it off, we also get Richard Madden (yes, Robb Stark himself), which certainly doesn’t hurt the viewing experience.
The film is entertaining, stylish, and refreshingly unpretentious. Exactly the kind of thing you want to put on during a lazy weekend when you want to relax, unwind, and enjoy something well-crafted, without overthinking it.
